Travel Hacks For the Frugal Traveler

I’ve been backpacking around Asia for the last 3-months with only a 7kg carryon… the free carryon, not the one that costs extra.

These are things I’ve been doing to save money and be a little more comfortable in places where there are limited resources.

Make your own body scrub with coconut oil and sugar. After the sun, I NEEDED a good scrub.

Do your own laundry in the sink. I like to soak mine and then stomp on it in the shower before hanging it up to dry. It’s not as good as a washing machine but sometimes you don’t have access to one or laundry service takes too long. I carry my own detergent and softener but you can use body wash in a pinch too.
Be sure you really soak anything new. These are all new rayon items and I’ve found the red, orange and pink dyes REALLY bleed before washing.

This brings me to my next tip- wear your few clothing items as long as you can, donate and buy new items locally. I’ve worn out the 3 dresses I packed so I got 3 new dresses for around $40 AUD at a local shop in Thailand. They’re all natural fibers and good quality.

Do workout videos in your room and use water bottles as free weights. You can fill bottles with sand or use bigger bottles for more weight.

That’s all for now, I’ll add more as I remember them!
